Labioplasty Surgery

Labioplasty Surgery

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is the surgical correction of the inner lips (labia minora) located within the outer lips (labia majora) at the entrance of the vagina. The labia minora, also known as the inner lips, do not contain fat tissue or hair. They are rich in blood vessels, nerve endings, and moisture. The inner lips are positioned on either side of the vaginal entrance and meet at the top to form the clitoral hood. Anatomically, the inner lips partially cover the vaginal opening and are located within the outer lips.

Under normal circumstances, they are not visible since they are within the outer lips. However, when their size, sagging, or asymmetry (one being larger than the other) makes them noticeable from the outside, this can negatively impact hygiene, genital aesthetic appearance, and sexual confidence.

Labiaplasty Surgery

When we talk about labiaplasty surgery, we refer to procedures performed on the inner lips rather than the outer lips. Sagging of the labia minora occurs mostly due to genetic factors but can also result from waxing (which may cause sagging),weight fluctuations, and other similar processes. It is one of the most frequently requested procedures in genital aesthetics.

Genital aesthetic surgery has become increasingly popular worldwide, including in our country, with more patients seeking these procedures. Labiaplasty is the most commonly performed genital aesthetic operation in Turkey. If labia majora hypertrophy (enlarged outer lips) is present, it can be reduced in size, or if the fat tissue within the outer lips has diminished over time, causing a sunken and wrinkled appearance, this can be corrected using fat grafting or hyaluronic acid fillers. This procedure is known as Barbie vulva aesthetics. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS),labiaplasty procedures increased by 217% over a five-year period as of 2017.

The growing popularity of labiaplasty can be attributed to women becoming more aware of their genital anatomy, increased exposure to aesthetic vulva images through social media and the internet, and the normalization of discussions surrounding genital concerns and sexual issues. As a result, it has become one of the most preferred surgical procedures among women in our country as well.

Labiaplasty is also referred to as lip aesthetic surgery. When the inner lips are saggy, large, dark-colored, asymmetrical, or wrinkled, they are reduced using specialized micro-surgical techniques. The goal is to create thinner, symmetrical inner lips that remain within the outer lips, achieving a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

What is Inner Lip Aesthetics?

The labia minora, or inner lips, are located inside the outer lips. These do not contain fat tissue but are rich in small blood vessels and have a sponge-like structure. They are two soft skin folds that vary in length, shape, and color depending on genetics and ethnicity.

The inner lips do not have hair follicles but contain sebaceous glands, nerve endings, and blood vessels. In addition to the clitoris and G-spot, the inner lips also contain erectile tissue, which plays a role in sexual arousal. Therefore, we do not recommend completely removing them during labiaplasty. Removing the inner lips entirely can obstruct the urethral opening, vaginal entrance, and the ducts of the Bartholin’s glands. If performed incorrectly by an inexperienced surgeon, the removal of the inner lips can make it easier for bacteria and fungi to enter the vagina, leading to infections.

During sexual intercourse, the lubrication provided by the sebaceous glands on the surface of the inner lips helps facilitate penetration. Due to their rich vascular and nerve supply, inner lips that are abnormally large, saggy, bulky, folded, wrinkled, or dark in color can be surgically reduced and refined to achieve a symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing appearance. This procedure is also known as inner lip aesthetics.

What Does Labiaplasty Mean?

The term “labiaplasty” is derived from Latin: “labium” means “lip,” and “plasty” refers to correction or reconstruction. Labiaplasty is the medical term for genital lip aesthetic surgery. The outer lips of the female genitalia are called the labia majora, which differ from the inner lips as they are covered with hair. Although the outer lips can also undergo aesthetic procedures under the term “labiaplasty,” this is more specifically referred to as labia majora aesthetics or majoraplasty. Inner lip aesthetics, on the other hand, is more commonly performed and is referred to as labia minora plasty.

To clarify the terminology, labiaplasty can be categorized into two types:

  • Labia minora plasty – Inner lip aesthetics
  • Labia majoraplasty – Outer lip aesthetics

However, in general, the term labiaplasty is commonly used to refer to inner lip aesthetic procedures. Patients from both abroad and within the country can undergo labiaplasty surgery the day after their consultation. Who Can Have Labiaplasty Surgery and Under What Conditions?

Labial hypertrophy refers to the inner labia extending beyond the outer labia, appearing asymmetrical, thick, dark, wide, saggy, or resembling a "cauliflower" or "elephant ear" shape. Since this condition can cause various discomforts, it is not considered a normal anatomical variation. So, who experiences labial hypertrophy, and what causes it?

The primary reason for having enlarged, thick, folded, and sagging inner labia is usually genetic and congenital factors. During puberty, hormonal changes make this condition more noticeable. However, in some individuals, genetics may not be the primary cause. External factors that irritate the genital area—such as yeast infections, itching, friction, improper underwear choices, waxing, excessive manipulation of the labia during masturbation, or pulling on them during adolescence—can contribute to the enlargement, sagging, and darkening of the inner labia.

Other factors can also lead to labial hypertrophy. One of these is an excess of androgen hormones, often seen in young women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or overactive adrenal glands. In such cases, the inner labia may experience gradual enlargement and sagging over time.

Can Inner Labia Asymmetry Be Corrected?

Labial asymmetry refers to one inner labium being larger than the other. This size difference may also be accompanied by variations in surface texture and pigmentation. Labial asymmetry can be congenital or develop over time due to hormonal issues, waxing, yeast infections, accidents (such as traffic accidents),or injuries from activities like cycling.

Labiaplasty surgery can effectively correct these asymmetrical conditions. During the procedure, both labia are reshaped to achieve symmetry, ensuring a balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Can Irregularities on the Edges of the Inner Labia Be Fixed?

The edges of the inner labia (labia minora) may sometimes appear darker, rough, or uneven, with irregular ridges. This condition may affect one or both labia. Ideally, the labial edges should be as smooth and symmetrical as possible. Women and young girls with such irregularities often feel self-conscious, leading to decreased self-esteem and emotional distress. Labiaplasty can remove these uneven edges, creating a more refined and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

In summary, dear reader, if you are experiencing issues such as asymmetrical, sagging, large, or dark-colored inner labia and these concerns are affecting your confidence and psychological well-being, you can benefit from labiaplasty surgery performed by skilled and experienced surgeons. We have been specializing in this field for many years. For more information and consultation, please contact us through the phone number available on our website.

Why Is Labiaplasty Surgery Performed?

Women consult doctors for various concerns and different reasons. Each woman has a unique reason for seeking medical advice. Below, I will list the most common reasons why patients come to us for labiaplasty surgery, which are also supported by literature, as you can verify through relevant sources.

  • When wearing a bikini, tights, or lingerie for special occasions, the noticeable bulge and sagging tissues in this area can cause discomfort. The outwardly protruding appearance may lead women to isolate themselves socially, lose interest in wearing certain clothes, and experience persistent distress.
  • Due to excessive size, sagging, and folded structures of these tissues, fungal and bacterial infections frequently develop between the folds. Since the area is also naturally moist, these infections tend to worsen over time. As a result, these women suffer from recurrent urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, and yeast infections, requiring frequent medication and doctor visits.
  • During sexual intercourse, women may feel self-conscious in front of their partner. The aesthetic appearance of the genital area can cause embarrassment, anxiety, and fear of being unattractive, leading to difficulties initiating intimacy, preferring dimly lit environments, struggling to focus during intercourse, and ultimately losing sexual desire or experiencing orgasm problems. Over time, this lack of confidence can create significant issues in their marriages and relationships.
  • Hygienic reasons: Women with this condition often experience persistent genital odor and accumulation of white-yellowish smegma between the folds of the inner labia. These factors contribute to hygiene issues. Because of the odor, they feel the need to wash their external genital area frequently. Additionally, the moist environment and accumulation allow bacteria and fungi to thrive between the folds, causing infections, odor, and discharge. This significantly impacts a woman's social and professional life. They may spend extended time in the restroom trying to maintain genital hygiene, which can be extremely distressing. Wearing jeans, underwear, tights, or similar clothing often leads to itching, pain, or discomfort due to friction against the enlarged and sagging labia. As a result, they tend to avoid such clothing and may even struggle to wear a simple pair of jeans.
  • Another major issue is sexual intercourse: During penetration, the inner labia may become irritated, causing pain and swelling. In some cases, the movement of the penis in and out can also cause the inner labia to be pulled inside, which is painful for the woman. In extreme cases, the labia may be so large that the woman must hold them apart with her hands to allow penetration. The necessity of doing this during intercourse can cause discomfort and avoidance of sexual activity.
  • Urination difficulties: Some might wonder what this has to do with labiaplasty. However, anatomically, the inner labia are very close to the urethra (the opening where urine exits). As urine flows out, it may hit the inner labia and spread in different directions. Many women who seek this surgery report difficulties such as, “Doctor, I have trouble urinating properly, or I always need to find a toilet with a seat,” or “I accidentally urinate on my inner thighs, or my urine sprays in multiple directions.” They express these concerns with embarrassment.
  • Limitations in physical activities: In today’s world, women play an active role in professional life. Some professions require activities like horseback riding, cycling, motorcycle riding, or swimming. However, not only work but also hobbies and daily life are affected by this condition. Women frequently avoid activities that involve tight clothing, such as cycling, motorcycle riding, and wearing bikinis or swimsuits for swimming. The enlarged and protruding labia can cause both aesthetic concerns and physical discomfort due to friction during these activities, leading to pain and irritation.

As seen in the points above, these women do not seek this surgery solely for cosmetic reasons! Although it is commonly referred to as an "inner labia aesthetic surgery," medically, it is a necessity. Unlike rhinoplasty, which is primarily for aesthetic purposes, labiaplasty addresses an anatomical issue that restricts a woman’s sexual life, causes social discomfort, leads to frequent hygiene problems, and limits physical activities. Correcting this anatomical condition through surgery is a medical necessity rather than a mere cosmetic preference.

Who is Labiaplasty Surgery for?

Inner labia aesthetics, also known as labiaplasty surgery, can be performed on individuals experiencing issues such as enlargement or sagging, especially if these problems negatively affect their social, sexual, and overall quality of life. If it becomes a medical necessity, this procedure can be performed on anyone over the age of 18. Before performing labiaplasty, the surgeon must conduct a preoperative evaluation, examine the patient, determine the surgical technique, and assess whether there are any additional medical conditions that may prevent the surgery. If there is an additional issue, such as vaginal looseness after childbirth, vaginoplasty (vaginal tightening surgery) can be combined with labiaplasty to address these concerns.

Which Women Undergo Labiaplasty?

Although labiaplasty is often perceived as an aesthetic procedure, it is also performed in cases where the inner labia are abnormally large, thick, wide, have irregular edges, are asymmetrical, or have a dark pigmentation. It is suitable for women who experience a lack of sexual confidence, embarrassment during intercourse, pain during intercourse, difficulty engaging in certain physical activities, discomfort wearing tight leggings, bikinis, or jeans, and those who do not feel attractive or feminine due to their labial appearance.

Why is Labiaplasty Performed?

Labiaplasty is considered a medical necessity for women experiencing hypertrophy of the inner labia (excessive enlargement),recurrent vaginal infections, urinary tract infections, irritation, painful intercourse due to friction, restricted physical movement, and urination difficulties. Additionally, some women who previously had normal-sized inner labia may develop anatomical issues over time due to multiple childbirths, trauma during vaginal delivery, complications from stitches, rapid weight fluctuations, hormonal imbalances, or menopause-related changes.

After labiaplasty, the outer labia should completely cover the inner labia. In women who have never given birth or those with naturally large inner labia, sagging may occur over time in both the outer and inner labia. Regardless of the cause, when sagging, enlargement, or asymmetry exceed the individual's acceptable limits, it can create an aesthetically displeasing appearance, leading to feelings of discomfort and loss of self-confidence. Even if it is not medically necessary, such changes can significantly impact a person’s life in various ways. When the sagging of the inner labia reaches an advanced stage, it may even prevent women from wearing swimsuits, bikinis, leggings, or jeans comfortably.

In sports disciplines where physical appearance is important, performing arts, or certain professions, this condition may even negatively affect a woman's professional life. Furthermore, all these issues can have a detrimental impact on a woman’s sexual life. A lack of self-confidence can reduce overall quality of life. In summary, dear reader, I hope I have made it clear that labiaplasty is often more than just a cosmetic procedure—it can be a medical necessity.

Labiaplasty Surgery Cost

The cost of labiaplasty varies depending on the experience of the surgeon, the hospital where the procedure is performed, the duration of the surgery, the surgical technique used, the type of anesthesia administered, and the geographical location of the clinic. Therefore, it is essential to discuss the cost details in person with the surgeon performing the procedure.

Dear women, the most important point to remember is that this surgery is highly specialized and should be performed by experienced surgeons who have received training in this field. The inner labia and surrounding area are rich in nerve endings and are closely related to sexual pleasure. The surgeon performing the procedure must have a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the clitoris and surrounding structures, along with significant expertise in this area.

If too much tissue is removed, it can result in frequent vaginal infections, an unappealing aesthetic outcome, vaginal dryness due to excessive opening of the vaginal entrance, and difficulties in sexual pleasure. Therefore, you must be careful when choosing your surgeon!

We strongly recommend that this surgery be performed in a sterile operating room environment. For detailed information about the procedure and pricing, you can contact our clinic at (+90 501 242 18 81).

Choosing the right surgeon is of utmost importance and should be approached with great care.

Labiaplasty Surgery Methods

Labiaplasty, also known as inner labia aesthetics, has numerous surgical techniques described in the literature. So, how do we decide which technique to apply and to whom? First, we examine the patient. We determine the appropriate method based on the thickness of the tissue, the size of the tissue, the condition of the hoods on the sides and above the clitoris, and the distance of the clitoris from the vaginal entrance. We then discuss the chosen method with the patient. If the patient has a specific aesthetic preference, the desired appearance can be achieved depending on the surgeon's experience and the suitability of the patient's anatomy.

The choice of technique is primarily determined by the surgeon’s experience. The surgeon can use multiple techniques depending on the individual's anatomy. Labiaplasty is almost like solving a puzzle. Just like a sculptor, the surgeon visualizes the final result within the tissue and brings it to life. Therefore, the surgeon is also performing an art.

Labiaplasty Techniques:

  • V-Plasty
  • Z-Plasty
  • Partial Resection
  • Laser Labiaplasty
  • Delamination Technique
  • Star Labiaplasty
  • Composite Reduction
  • Wedge Labiaplasty

The technique to be applied depends on the surgeon’s experience, the anatomical appearance of the labia, the patient’s preference, and the structure of the inner labia. Some women prefer a more natural look, while others desire a completely hidden appearance within the outer labia, known as Barbie vulva aesthetics. Barbie aesthetics is actually a combination of multiple procedures. It includes surgeries that result in thin, delicate inner labia hidden within fuller, smoother, and more voluminous outer labia while also addressing excess tissue in the perineal area.

V-Plasty Technique

As the name suggests, this technique involves making a V-shaped incision to reduce the size of the inner labia while preserving their natural edges. However, if the labial edges are thick, rough, irregular, or jagged, the partial excision technique is preferred instead.

Z-Plasty Technique

This technique provides a natural appearance. Although Z-plasty is easy to perform, the healing process takes longer, and patient compliance can be challenging. Therefore, it is not commonly used.

Partial Labiaplasty Technique

This method ensures that the labia minora remain inside the labia majora by removing the dark outer areas, often combined with clitoral hood reduction. It is a relatively simple and easy surgical technique. The risk of suture dehiscence (stitches opening) is low, but due to postoperative swelling, there is a chance of uneven healing. Recovery and application are somewhat challenging, and this technique may cause mild pain compared to other methods.

Laser Labiaplasty

Laser labiaplasty is performed in a clinical setting using a laser for surgical incisions. The use of a laser minimizes bleeding and reduces the need for sutures. However, it is not suitable for severe asymmetry, complex cases, or hypertrophic labia, as there is a risk of damaging surrounding tissues.

Wedge Resection

This method involves removing a wedge-shaped section from the inner labia while preserving the natural edges. However, there is a risk of tissue necrosis due to potential disruption of blood supply, leading to a complication known as fenestration (formation of holes in the tissue). Therefore, this technique is generally preferred for younger, non-smoking, and physically active patients.

Delamination Technique

In this technique, both superficial and deep tissue layers are removed to achieve size reduction. The goal is to preserve the underlying tissue while minimizing bleeding. However, labia treated with this method tend to remain slightly thicker than those treated with other techniques. As a result, it is not the preferred option for patients seeking a thinner and more refined labial appearance.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

Labiaplasty should only be performed by experienced, well-trained surgeons in a hospital setting. It is crucial to research and select a qualified professional before undergoing this procedure.

The duration of the surgery varies from patient to patient, typically lasting between 1 to 4 hours. Since spinal anesthesia is used, the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure. Mild spotting or bleeding is normal for a few days after the surgery. Around the 5th to 10th day post-surgery, some patients may experience slight itching at the suture site. If necessary, an antihistamine tablet can be taken with a doctor’s approval, but the area should never be scratched.

Preoperative Preparations

  • Schedule a pre-surgical consultation with your doctor.
  • Ideally, the surgery should be performed after your menstrual period to promote better wound healing and reduce infection risk.
  • Shave or remove hair from the genital area before the procedure.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing, such as a nightgown or soft, breathable pajamas, for post-surgery comfort.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery.

By following these guidelines and working with a skilled surgeon, patients can achieve the best possible aesthetic and functional outcomes from labiaplasty surgery.

What Is the Best Technique for Labiaplasty Surgery?

The best technique for labiaplasty is the one tailored to the individual’s genital anatomy. The most suitable technique depends on factors such as the thickness of the labia, the degree of hypertrophy, tissue characteristics, and whether additional procedures like clitoral hood reduction, vaginoplasty, or perineoplasty will be performed simultaneously. The most crucial factor in aesthetic surgeries is the surgeon’s experience and expertise in the field.

What Should Be Considered After Labiaplasty Surgery?

After labiaplasty surgery, it is essential to take the prescribed medications as directed by your doctor and follow the recommended wound care routine. Maintaining personal and genital hygiene, particularly in toilet and cleansing habits, is crucial. Applying cold compresses can help reduce post-surgical swelling more quickly. Unless otherwise advised by your doctor, avoid swimming in pools or the sea, engaging in strenuous physical activities, and having sexual intercourse for at least one month after surgery.

When Can I Have Sexual Intercourse After Labiaplasty?

Sutures from labiaplasty surgery typically dissolve or fall out on their own within 7 to 10 days. However, complete tissue healing requires approximately one month. Therefore, it is recommended to abstain from sexual activity for at least one month to prevent wound reopening, infection, or scarring. Adhering to your doctor’s post-operative guidelines ensures a smooth healing process.

Can Labiaplasty Be Combined with Vaginal Tightening Surgery?

Yes, labiaplasty is often performed in combination with vaginal tightening surgery. If the patient has significant vaginal laxity, both procedures can be addressed in a single surgery. However, it is crucial to discuss this with your surgeon beforehand and receive all necessary pre-operative information. By undergoing both procedures under a single anesthesia session, patients can achieve optimal genital reconstruction and enhanced sexual confidence.

What Is Barbie Vagina Aesthetic Surgery?

Originally defined in the United States, the Barbie vagina aesthetic—also known as "baby doll vagina" surgery—is a procedure designed to create a neater and more youthful genital appearance. This technique involves significant reduction and thinning of the inner labia while enhancing the outer labia’s fullness. Excess tissue in the perineal area is also corrected. The inner labia are reduced as much as possible, but they are not entirely removed.

Additionally, excess tissue over the clitoris may be trimmed, repositioning the clitoris closer to the vaginal opening to enhance its appearance. If needed, fat grafting or hyaluronic acid fillers can be applied to the outer labia for a more sensual look. Some women prefer a less drastic reduction of the inner labia for a more natural aesthetic, a technique often referred to as natural labiaplasty or hybrid vagina surgery.

What is Clitoral Aesthetics?

Anatomically, the tissue that covers the clitoris is called the clitoral hood. Clitoral aesthetics, also referred to as clitoral hoodoplasty, involves the procedure of enhancing the appearance of the clitoris and its surrounding areas. In cases where the clitoris is positioned more than 2.5 cm from the vaginal opening, a technique can be used to bring it closer. This adjustment increases the exposure of the clitoris during vaginal penetration, enhancing stimulation and the possibility of vaginal orgasm.

Clitoral aesthetics involve various procedures such as clitoral hoodoplasty, where excess tissue is removed from the clitoral hood, wrinkles are smoothed, and the area is given a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. This surgery is often combined with labioplasty. If labioplasty is performed without addressing the clitoral hood, it may lead to an unsightly appearance resembling a micro penis, as the clitoris may appear to protrude unattractively. This could cause psychological discomfort and dissatisfaction. Therefore, it is crucial to choose a surgeon who is experienced in both labioplasty and clitoral anatomy.

A second chance for surgery in this area might be highly risky or even impossible, which is why choosing a surgeon skilled in clitoral aesthetics alongside labioplasty is important.

What is Clitoral Hoodoplasty?

Clitoral hoodoplasty is a surgical procedure in which the excess skin folds, known as the clitoral hood, are removed. This operation enhances the appearance by eliminating these extra tissues and wrinkles, resulting in a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing look. Unlike clitoral aesthetics, clitoral hoodoplasty does not involve repositioning the clitoris itself. However, removing excess tissue from the hood and the sides of the clitoris is part of the procedure. Various techniques, such as the Reverse Y technique, Diamond technique, and U technique, may be used depending on the individual's anatomy.

Clitoral hoodoplasty is often combined with labioplasty. If only labioplasty is performed without addressing the clitoral hood, the clitoris can appear unnaturally, resembling a micro penis, which may cause the patient psychological discomfort and dissatisfaction. Therefore, when choosing a surgeon for labioplasty, it is essential to ensure they have specific experience in clitoral anatomy.

Why is Clitoral Aesthetics Important?

When labioplasty is performed and the inner labia are reduced for a more aesthetically pleasing look, but the clitoral hood remains, it can create an unsightly, protruding appearance, much like a micro penis. This is why clitoral aesthetics should always be included when performing labioplasty or Barbie aesthetics. If this is not done, patients are often dissatisfied with the final appearance and may seek a second surgery. If you're reading this, I hope you now understand how important it is to find a surgeon who is highly experienced and specialized in this field.

How Does Clitoral Aesthetics and Clitoral Hoodoplasty Affect Sexual Life?

When performed by experienced surgeons using the correct technique, clitoral aesthetics can enhance sexual pleasure. A surgeon who is familiar with the clitoris' anatomy, vessels, and nerves can remove excess tissue without damaging the sensitive areas, resulting in increased sexual satisfaction and easier access to orgasm.

Do Clitoral Hoodoplasty and Clitoral Aesthetics Affect Sexual Pleasure Negatively?

If performed by a surgeon specialized in this field, clitoral hoodoplasty and clitoral aesthetics will not reduce sexual pleasure but rather enhance it. Following the surgery, patients often experience an increase in sexual confidence, and achieving orgasm becomes easier. The key is to ensure that the surgeon you choose is experienced in this area. Many procedures are performed by plastic surgeons and gynecologists, but only a few have the expertise necessary for optimal clitoral aesthetics.

Although many surgeons may appear capable of performing this surgery, the clitoris' anatomical and functional placement requires a delicate and experienced approach. The goal is to achieve both aesthetic enhancement and uncover the glans of the clitoris, the most sensitive part, without fully exposing it. In summary, if you are considering surgery due to anatomical issues in the clitoris, it is vital to work with an expert in this delicate area. The experience of the surgeon is extremely important.

When performed with the correct surgical techniques, labioplasty and clitoral aesthetics not only provide aesthetic benefits but also enhance sexual confidence and address functional issues, such as vaginal infections, discomfort during intercourse, and urinary problems. These procedures will empower you to engage in physical activities, wear clothes you couldn't before, and do sports you had to avoid, providing you with both aesthetic and functional freedom.

What Anesthesia is Used in Labioplasty Surgery?

Labioplasty surgery can be performed under local, general, or spinal anesthesia (epidural anesthesia). The duration of the surgery varies from 1 to 4 hours, depending on the person's anatomical structure and the surgical techniques used. If vaginal tightening, urinary incontinence, and perineoplasty surgeries are performed during the same session, the surgery time may be extended. Regardless of the anesthesia method chosen, the patient will not feel any pain or discomfort during the surgery.

We often recommend performing these surgeries in an operating room environment. In surgeries performed under local anesthesia, the area tends to be both bloody and swollen. The anesthesia applied to the surgical area can cause swelling, and sometimes excessive swelling in one area may result in symmetry problems after the surgery. For these reasons, we recommend performing these surgeries in an operating room.

Will There Be a Hospital Stay After Labioplasty Surgery?

Labioplasty surgery is performed in an operating room. After the surgery, you will likely stay in the hospital for one night to control swelling, infection, and manage post-operative pain with analgesia. Post-operative pain is usually minimal and is managed with prescribed medications.

What to Expect After Labioplasty Surgery?

If performed by an experienced surgeon, complications are rare. However, as with any surgical procedure, there can be complications such as infection or bleeding at the incision site. To avoid these, we strongly recommend that the surgery be performed by a specialist surgeon, in a sterile environment, and in an adequately equipped hospital operating room. We do not generally expect significant bleeding after the surgery.

Rarely, slight bleeding or spotting may occur at the suture site for a few days after the surgery. In the first days following surgery, swelling typically develops in the genital area, so a certain amount of swelling, redness, and sensitivity is normal. Some surgeons may recommend cold compresses after surgery to reduce swelling.

The genital area has a rich blood supply, so wound healing usually occurs within 7 to 10 days. Since absorbable sutures are used during the surgery, the stitches will dissolve or fall off on their own within 10 to 15 days. For post-operative pain, your doctor may prescribe pain relievers for you to take orally. Depending on the surgical technique used, the surgeon, and any combined procedures, you can return to work within 7 to 10 days after the surgery. With no complications, the genital area generally returns to normal within 30 to 40 days. Swelling may take up to 3 months to resolve.

During the healing process, it is essential to maintain proper hygiene in the area. Until full recovery is achieved, which typically takes about 4-5 weeks, you should follow your doctor's instructions for dressings. You should avoid activities such as yoga, pilates, weightlifting, cycling, motorcycling, and horseback riding. When using the toilet, be sure to clean the area from front to back to prevent contamination from feces. After surgery, your doctor may advise you to avoid swimming pools, saunas, the sea, and baths to minimize the risk of infection.

We recommend taking a shower three days after the surgery. Generally, sexual intercourse should be avoided for up to a month, until full recovery is achieved, which may take up to 40 days.

We do not recommend hair removal methods such as laser treatments, waxing, or epilators in the genital area. "So, what should we do if the hair grows back?" In this case, you can trim the hair with scissors or use hair removal creams after 10 days post-surgery.

Is It Necessary to Stay in the Hospital After a Labioplasty Surgery?

Labioplasty surgery can be performed in both clinics and operating rooms. Non-complicated labioplasty surgeries that do not take long hours can be done in a clinical setting. In this case, your doctor will advise you to rest for a few hours at the clinic. You can walk home and begin your rest period. For surgeries performed in an operating room, it is generally recommended to stay for one night. In surgeries done in a clinic, local anesthesia is used, so you will not experience significant pain. However, the swelling may be higher compared to surgeries performed in an operating room. After 7 to 10 days of rest, you can return to your social and work life comfortably.

During your rest at home, especially during the first 3 days, it is important to avoid strenuous activities and long periods of standing. To accelerate wound healing, it is recommended to rest without wearing underwear, if possible, to allow the area to breathe. Proper personal and genital hygiene, as well as following the dressings your doctor recommends, are essential to prevent infections and promote healing. Your surgeon will explain all the details to you and answer your questions.

By following your doctor’s instructions, you can usually achieve satisfying results with no visible scars after surgery.

Can Labioplasty Surgery Be Performed on Young Girls, That Is, Those with Virginity?

Labia are structures located just 2-3 cm in front of the hymen, inside the outer lips. The hymen (virginity membrane) is located behind the inner lips. Therefore, no harm will come to the hymen during labia surgery. Labioplasty can be safely performed on any young girl over the age of 18, whether she is a virgin or not. Young girls can undergo labioplasty surgery without any concerns about damaging their virginity.

Will There Be Scarring After a Labioplasty Surgery?

After labiaplasty (inner labia aesthetic surgery),scarring is generally not noticeable after the sutures are removed, depending on the tissue characteristics, the surgeon's experience, and the type of sutures and technique used. Your partner, whether they are your spouse or a new partner, will not be able to tell that you have had the surgery unless you explicitly inform them. It’s important to note that the surgeon’s experience and expertise in this area are crucial. Otherwise, there might be a slight risk of scarring.

Will the Labia Sag Again After Labioplasty Surgery?

After the excess tissue is removed during labioplasty, the tissue will not sag or stretch again. It is not possible for the tissue to regenerate or elongate.

Does Having a Labioplasty Surgery Affect My Ability to Give Birth?

Labioplasty surgery focuses on reducing the size of the inner labia to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. Birth is related to the vagina. A vaginal or cesarean birth will not affect the appearance of the labia post-surgery. The appearance will remain the same after both vaginal and cesarean deliveries, and giving birth will not cause the labia to grow or sag again.

What is the Appropriate Age for Labioplasty Surgery?

Labioplasty surgery can be performed on any woman who is over 18 years old, whether married or single, whether they have given birth or not, and if they have labial hypertrophy or do not feel good about their appearance. While labioplasty is classified as an aesthetic surgery, it is actually a medical necessity for many women. These women often experience vaginal and fungal infections, frequent urinary tract infections, constant discomfort in underwear, difficulty performing various sports, trouble wearing certain clothing, pain during sexual intercourse, low sexual confidence with their partners, and issues with urination. In this sense, it is not much different from nose aesthetics. The surgery is medically necessary and should be performed by a skilled surgeon.

It is specifically noted that the surgery should be performed after the age of 18, because the labia grow and sag during the hormonal changes of puberty, influenced by rising hormone levels and genetic factors. Hormonal activity in young girls concludes at around 18 years of age. If surgery is performed before this age, there may be recurrence of sagging and growth due to ongoing hormonal changes. For this reason, it is preferred to wait until after the age of 18 when puberty is completed and hormone levels have stabilized.

Will I Experience Any Problems After Labioplasty Surgery?

As with any surgery, there are risks involved in labioplasty, such as bleeding, suture dehiscence, and infection, although the chances are minimal. When performed by a skilled surgeon using the correct techniques, these risks are minimized.

If the surgery is not performed by a skilled surgeon or using the right technique, there may be dissatisfaction and the need for revision surgeries. However, it is important to remember that the labia area is rich in nerve endings. Some nerve damage can occur during surgery, even with the best techniques. Therefore, it is important to choose an experienced surgeon who specializes in this area. Aim for a single surgery that will give you lifelong results, rather than undergoing additional corrective procedures.
